India’s spiritual heartbeats pulsed strongly this Buddha Purnima as hordes of faithful descended upon Prayagraj and Haridwar. Celebrating the triple milestones of Gautama Buddha—his birth, attainment of enlightenment, and final nirvana—the day saw relentless streams of pilgrims heading to the Ganga and Sangam for ritualistic baths.

At Prayagraj’s iconic Triveni Sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati, excitement was palpable. Families and individuals alike plunged into the waters, their faces lit with reverence. One devotee recounted, ‘Fulfilling my mother’s long-held desire, we’ve come for this holy dip on Buddha Purnima. Our prayers are for national prosperity.’

Priests at the site elaborated on the day’s rituals. Known as Vaishakh Purnima, it holds promises of domestic bliss through sacred baths, alms-giving, and offerings to the needy and animals. ‘Such acts please the forefathers and cleanse one’s karma,’ they noted, drawing even larger crowds year after year.

Shifting to Haridwar, the Ganga Aarti preparations blended seamlessly with the bathing frenzy. A local said, ‘Ganga’s touch brings home fortune; charity amplifies it.’ The ghats overflowed with activity from dawn.

Safety was paramount, with Haridwar officials deploying extensive forces. CO Shishupal Negi detailed the strategy: police presence at every key point, supported by specialized units like SSB, intelligence teams, ATS, and quick-response squads. ‘From rural hamlets to urban centers, devotees are pouring in—we’re fully prepared,’ he assured.

This annual spectacle underscores Buddhism’s enduring legacy in Hindu traditions, blending seamlessly into India’s pluralistic faith landscape. As evening fell, the full moon’s glow sanctified the rituals, leaving indelible memories of piety and communal harmony.
