In a solemn ceremony at Mumbai’s Hutatma Smarak, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis commemorated the martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement on the state’s foundation day. The tribute highlighted the enduring spirit that shaped modern Maharashtra.

This landmark agitation from 1956-1960 united Marathi speakers in their demand for a separate state encompassing Bombay. Fadnavis drew parallels to the state’s storied past, crediting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s vision and the bhakti tradition for its cultural depth.

‘Maharashtra has led social reforms and now stands as India’s growth powerhouse,’ the CM remarked. He wished prosperity to all citizens while acknowledging labourers on International Workers’ Day. ‘Our progress owes everything to their hard work – salutations to every toiler.’

Fadnavis shared his message online: ‘Warm Maharashtra Day greetings! Our state marches forward dynamically with foresight and ambition.’

At Raj Bhavan, Governor CP Radhakrishnan led the flag-hoisting for the 67th anniversary, joined by family, secretaries, and staff amid renditions of patriotic songs.

Rooted in mid-1950s activism, Maharashtra’s creation on May 1, 1960, symbolizes linguistic pride and determination. Celebrated with parades, cultural programs, and public holidays, the day reinforces commitment to development, unity, and the sacrifices that built the state.
