Tensions flared in Manipur’s capital Imphal as a torchlight procession on April 18 devolved into widespread vandalism and arson. Organized by local civil groups along the Patsoi-Sagolband stretch of Imphal-Jiribam road, the rally saw participants turn aggressive, pelting security forces with stones and petrol bombs. Government vehicles bore the brunt of the fury, and three personnel from CRPF’s 232nd Battalion were critically wounded.

Quick action by Manipur Police scattered the agitators and contained the situation. Now, 21 troublemakers face charges, with detailed identities released: Thongbam Roger (39) from Sagolband Meino Leirak, Gurumayum Max Sharma (26) from Brahmapur Laipum Leikai, and Mutum Murari (37), to name a few. The list spans neighborhoods like Nongada Makha Leikai and Thangmeiband Laorung Purel Leikai, signaling a coordinated outburst.

Compounding the unrest, ethnic frictions boiled over in Ukhrul on the same day. Armed assailants gunned down two Naga men—Chinaoshang Shokhuwungnao and Yaruingam Washum—on NH-2 while they headed to Ukhrul. This double tragedy has amplified calls for de-escalation in a state long plagued by divisions.

As probes deepen, officials warn of stern measures against instigators. Community leaders advocate dialogue over disruption, but the cycle of violence raises questions about long-term stability in Manipur.
