From May 2026: QR Codes on All CBI Notices to Stop Cyber Scams

The Central Bureau of Investigation is set to revolutionize its communication protocol to shield the public from sophisticated cyber scams. Effective May 1, 2026, all CBI notices will incorporate exclusive QR codes, a first-of-its-kind safeguard against fraudulent alerts mimicking official directives.

Cybercriminals have increasingly resorted to fake CBI notices, preying on fears of arrests and investigations to extract money. The new QR system assigns a unique code to each notice, scannable for instant authentication. It reveals not just genuineness but also the document’s active validity window—post which the code renders useless.

This initiative stems from a sharp rise in impersonation frauds, where scammers pose as law enforcement to terrorize victims. By enabling easy verification, CBI aims to arm citizens with tools for self-protection.

Adding to the arsenal is ‘Abhay’, the agency’s AI chatbot. It allows seamless QR scanning and authenticity checks, providing immediate feedback and reducing panic-driven errors.

This forward-thinking reform promises to fortify investigative integrity, restore faith in official channels, and disrupt the operations of digital con artists across the nation.
