If your smartphone suddenly emitted a loud beep and displayed a ‘test message’ notification today, there is no cause for alarm. This was part of a planned technical trial by the Indian government to test its integrated disaster warning network. Managed by the DoT in collaboration with the NDMA, the system uses the ‘Common Alerting Protocol’ to deliver real-time emergency messages to citizens. Unlike standard texts, these alerts pop up instantly and can even bypass silent modes on many devices, ensuring that critical safety information reaches people even during late-night emergencies. This technology is essential for timely evacuations and reducing casualties during natural disasters.
