DFS Chief: Insurers Focus on Mass Reach Over Big Policies

In a bold directive to reshape India’s insurance sector, DFS Secretary M. Nagaraju has called on companies to center their policies around maximizing reach to the broader population. During a high-level review of strategic vision documents from LIC, GIC Re, and OICL, Nagaraju warned against the pitfalls of chasing premium-heavy products at the expense of volume.

‘Extend coverage to larger segments of the population— that’s the priority,’ he asserted. This comes amid concerns over persistent low insurance density, underscoring the need for insurers to democratize access rather than elite-focused offerings.

Key deliberations included crafting new-age products, ramping up digital infrastructure with robust cybersecurity, proliferating online distribution, expediting complaint resolutions, widening agent networks, and leveraging social media for outreach. The session scrutinized three- and five-year roadmaps, pushing for superior operational efficiencies, rock-solid financial health, and sustainable practices.

Further mandates targeted HR and IT overhauls to streamline service delivery. On the investment front, the Centre’s nod to 100% automatic FDI signals a liberalized regime, contingent on regulatory nods from IRDAI and adherence to foundational laws.

As public sector insurers recalibrate, this emphasis on inclusivity promises to narrow the vast uninsured gap, empowering households nationwide with vital financial shields. The roadmap ahead points to a more equitable, tech-savvy insurance ecosystem poised for exponential growth.
