AAP Leaders Urge President Murmu to Act on Punjab Defection Row

In a bold move against political horse-trading, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held discussions with President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi, spotlighting the defection plague afflicting the Aam Aadmi Party. A contingent of AAP MLAs and ministers traveled to the capital, though only Mann was granted an audience, amplifying the party’s call for justice to protect democracy.

The core grievance revolves around Rajya Sabha MPs and other leaders handpicked by AAP who later defected to other parties, eroding the mandate given by Punjab’s voters. Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO told reporters that this rendezvous with the President was to formally lodge their protest and seek corrective measures. ‘It’s a direct assault on the people’s will,’ he stated firmly.

Echoing this, Balbir Singh pointed out the inconsistency in access: if defectors can meet the President, why not loyal AAP voices? He positioned the matter as one of integrity and respect for electoral outcomes. Harpal Singh Cheema, the finance czar, detailed AAP’s unassailable position with 92 seats in the house, arriving peacefully to air legitimate concerns.

Cheema didn’t hold back on the BJP, branding their backdoor power grabs in anti-BJP states as desperate ploys that won’t succeed. ‘The streets of Punjab will soon echo with public outrage,’ he predicted. Aman Arora lamented the restricted access but stood resolute alongside Arvind Kejriwal’s vision, representing the collective voice of the state’s populace. Minister Sanjeev Arora stressed unbreakable party solidarity despite the limitations.

As tensions simmer, this presidential appeal marks a critical juncture. Will the head of state intervene to curb the malaise of defections? Punjab watches closely, hoping for a verdict that upholds democratic sanctity over partisan gamesmanship.
