KOLKATA: West Bengal Governor RN Ravi and his spouse Lakshmi Ravi sought divine intervention at the famed Kalighat Kali Temple on Tuesday, praying fervently for the state’s overall well-being and advancement.

Raj Bhavan’s official social media post captured the solemn moments, portraying the visit as a heartfelt commitment to the people’s aspirations.

The Kalighat Kali Temple, a cornerstone of Hindu pilgrimage, is enshrined among the 51 Shakti Peethas. Mythology recounts that Devi Sati’s right toe manifested here, making it a vortex of divine power. The temple’s Kali Puja rituals draw massive crowds annually, cementing its status as a spiritual beacon.

Historically, Kalighat has shaped Kolkata’s identity—its name possibly deriving from the temple itself. As a longstanding center of Tantra in eastern India, it has fueled Bengal’s artistic legacy, from literary masterpieces to the vibrant patachitra folk art form that narrates sacred tales on scrolls.

RN Ravi, a seasoned 1976-batch IPS retiree with a background in intelligence, took oath as West Bengal Governor on March 12, 2026. His prior gubernatorial stints include Tamil Nadu, Nagaland—where he navigated the Naga peace talks from August 2019 to September 2021—and a brief additional role in Meghalaya.

In an era of political turbulence, such gestures from the Governor bridge the gap between administration and the populace’s spiritual ethos, fostering unity and optimism for Bengal’s future.
