External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s Caribbean journey took a deeply personal turn with his arrival at Jamaica’s Old Harbour, the historic landing point for the first Indian migrants 180 years ago. The visit highlighted the resilience of the Indian diaspora in safeguarding their ancestral heritage amid Caribbean vibrancy.

Interacting with community leaders and families, Jaishankar lauded their dedication to traditions like Diwali celebrations, classical dances, and familial values. On his official X handle, he noted the significance: ‘Visited historic Old Harbour, the first port of Indian arrival in Jamaica 180 years back. Connected with the Indian diaspora and witnessed their preservation of culture and identity.’

He thanked Jamaican officials, including Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett and Olivia ‘Bubsy’ Grange, for their hospitality. This leg of his May 2-10 tour spans Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago, nations bound by CARICOM ties and shared Indian migratory history.

High-level meetings will cover defense cooperation, economic partnerships, climate resilience, and multilateral forums. India’s Foreign Ministry views the trip as a catalyst for deeper political engagement, economic collaboration, and South-South solidarity.

Jaishankar plans dialogues with entrepreneurs and diaspora figures to explore investments in tourism, agriculture, and renewables. The ‘Girmitiya’ legacy – from indentured workers under distorted ‘agreement’ contracts – forms the bedrock of Indo-Caribbean identity, with temples, schools, and festivals keeping the flame alive.

As global migrations reshape societies, such visits reinforce India’s role as a nurturing homeland, bridging oceans to nurture shared futures.
