A new era in offshore wind power dawned as China Three Gorges Corporation revealed the deployment of the 16MW ‘Three Gorges Navigator’ – the planet’s most powerful single-unit floating wind platform. Installed successfully near Yangjiang, Guangdong, on May 2 evening, this feat highlights China’s prowess in tackling deep-sea renewable challenges.
Far from land – over 70 km offshore in depths surpassing 50 meters – the turbine endures brutal conditions: waves over 20 meters tall and gusts hitting 73 m/s. Its design incorporates a semi-submersible platform and advanced mooring, but the star is the active ballast system, a first for Chinese offshore projects.
During operation, the system dynamically shifts water in three pillar tanks, minimizing turbine movement caused by rough seas and winds. This innovation guarantees consistent performance, minimizing downtime and maximizing energy output.
