RSF Exposes China as Worst Jail for Press Freedom

In a damning indictment, Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has named China the globe’s foremost incarcerator of journalists, with 110 reporters and three media staff currently behind bars. This revelation in their fresh World Press Freedom Index paints a grim picture of state-sponsored suppression.

Authorities deploy a toolkit of surveillance, bullying, and fear-mongering to muzzle coverage of taboo subjects. The index ranks China 178th among 180 nations—penultimate, surpassed only by North Korea (179th) and Eritrea (180th). A drop from 176th last year signals worsening conditions.

Sub-indices reveal the depth of the crisis: rock-bottom 179th in politics and law, 177th socially, and 173rd economically. No arena escapes the chokehold on free expression.

Spotlight falls on Zhang Zhan, the citizen journalist punished twice for her reporting. RSF lambasted officials in March for cutting her off from counsel. Come September 2025, a secretive hearing doled out four years for alleged disturbances—charges decried as bogus.

‘China is hell-bent on silencing Zhang for revealing a health catastrophe,’ said RSF’s Aleksandra Bielakowska. She called for worldwide advocacy to secure Zhang’s freedom, protection, and treatment. The trial shunned foreign diplomats and activists, detaining some briefly, while lawyers endure blockades and persecution.

Zhang’s ordeal began anew with her August 28, 2024 arrest; she’s now in Shanghai’s Pudong facility. Her first imprisonment stemmed from 2020 Wuhan dispatches, including dozens of online videos that pierced the official narrative.

As global watchdogs intensify scrutiny, China’s press freedom nadir demands urgent diplomatic intervention to safeguard those who dare to inform.
