In a brief yet symbolic transit, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar was accorded a rousing welcome at Zurich Airport by Anoop Dhingra, the dedicated India-Switzerland envoy. This gesture underscored the seamless diplomatic networks supporting Jaishankar’s high-stakes Caribbean journey from May 2-10.
Switzerland’s Indian Embassy captured the event on X, noting Dhingra’s enthusiastic reception during Jaishankar’s stopover en route to Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago. These CARICOM nations hold special significance due to their large Indian-origin populations, descendants of 19th-century Girmitiya indentured laborers who traveled under colonial ‘girmit’ contracts—a distorted form of ‘agreement.’
The tour’s agenda is packed: bilateral huddles with heads of state and foreign ministers on pressing regional and international matters. Expect talks on trade, security, and climate action, all aimed at fortifying political bonds and elevating South-South collaboration. Jaishankar will also connect with entrepreneurs and the vibrant Indian diaspora, fostering economic and cultural exchanges.
The Ministry of External Affairs views this as a pivotal move to invigorate historic relations. It follows closely on the heels of welcoming St. Kitts and Nevis’ new High Commission in New Delhi. Jaishankar applauded their CARICOM leadership since January and contributions to global forums like the International Solar Alliance, exemplifying mutual solidarity.
This multifaceted visit not only revitalizes people-to-people links but positions India as a reliable partner in the Caribbean’s growth story. With shared histories and forward-looking diplomacy, Jaishankar’s engagements promise to unlock new avenues for cooperation amid evolving global dynamics.
