Mark Wood: No Rush to Return, Another Injury Could End Career

Veteran England speedster Mark Wood is adopting a measured strategy for his international return, targeting late summer while warning that another injury could spell the end of his storied career. The 36-year-old, celebrated for his express pace, withdrew from the Ashes Perth Test due to a recurring knee problem after bowling only 11 overs.

His injury history is extensive: knee surgery in March 2025 came after a 15-month Test cricket hiatus caused by elbow and knee issues. November’s brief comeback in the Ashes first Test ended in disappointment, highlighting the fragility of his body at this stage.

Speaking openly, Wood shared his mindset. ‘I need to progress gradually. Truth be told, this might be my last real chance to do it properly. A rushed return would be disastrous. My goal is to feature in bowling later this summer,’ he revealed. While determined to reclaim his spot, he’s preparing for a post-cricket life if needed.

The toll of setbacks is evident. ‘More than a year post-surgery, rehabbing seven months to play one match and then sidelined again—it hurts. Given my age, missing games isn’t an option. Pre-injury, my bowling was sharp and quick,’ Wood added.

As England gears up for their home series starting June 4 against New Zealand, the fast bowling unit is depleted. Brydon Carse’s broken wrist rules him out, Jofra Archer’s IPL commitments could sideline him for Lord’s, and Wood’s absence persists. Young guns Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, and Matthew Fisher stand ready to fill the void.

With 119 Test wickets from 38 matches, 80 ODI scalps in 70 games, and 54 T20I victims in 38 outings, Wood’s legacy is secure—but all eyes are on his prudent recovery path.
