No Tolerance for Language-Based Violence: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis

In a powerful address on Maharashtra Day, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged residents to embrace Marathi while condemning any form of violence tied to language enforcement. The statement, delivered at Hutatma Chowk in Mumbai, addresses rising tensions over the state’s push for mandatory Marathi among service providers like auto-rickshaw drivers.

Rickshaw unions’ backlash led to a deadline extension till August, highlighting the friction. MNS chief Raj Thackeray amplified the debate, slamming the government for softness and demanding swift action against rule-breakers by revoking licenses.

Fadnavis countered by championing Maharashtra’s inclusive legacy. ‘We’ve never harbored thoughts of keeping outsiders away,’ he asserted, crediting Shivaji Maharaj’s teachings against exclusionary mindsets. He celebrated Marathis thriving nationwide through cultural adaptation, expecting reciprocity from those in Maharashtra.

Pride in one’s language is vital, the CM stressed, but must not breed hatred. Marathi, he portrayed as elegant and accessible, deserves promotion through support, not threats. The government’s strategy prioritizes accessible learning programs to build unity without division.

This comes amid broader discussions on regional identity versus cosmopolitan growth in India’s financial capital. Fadnavis’ words seek to navigate these waters, promoting linguistic respect alongside social cohesion.
