Bengal Phase 2 Polls: CCTV Surveillance Extended to Polling Station Roads

With the second phase of West Bengal’s high-stakes assembly elections just two days away on April 29, the Election Commission is leaving no stone unturned to safeguard the democratic process. A key directive now mandates CCTV installation on all roads approaching vital and ultra-sensitive polling booths, marking a significant upgrade in monitoring protocols.

An official from the state CEO’s office explained the rationale: First-phase polling saw internal cameras effectively prevent booth-level malpractices. But external intimidation reports necessitated broader oversight. Cameras will now track movements on access roads, with deployment scaled to each station’s risk profile.

To further tighten control, a 100-meter exclusion zone around booths prohibits non-voters and post-voting entrants. Delivery of essentials to officials demands DEO approval, coupled with stringent frisking to eliminate risks.

The CEO’s fervent appeal to electorate echoes loudly: Come out in droves, assured of protection. Aim for surpassing the first phase’s 90% turnout—it’s your democratic duty. Disruptors will be dealt with decisively, as notified to all parties.

On the security front, central paramilitary units received orders to ramp up operations against illicit bomb-making units statewide. Immediate escalation in defusing activities is crucial for a blast-free voting day. Notably, this came hours after NIA nabbed the prime suspect in a recent South 24 Parganas explosion, highlighting the proactive stance against violence.
