At the fifth edition of the MSME Startup Innovation Summit in New Delhi, stakeholders dissected key challenges and triumphs in India’s burgeoning startup landscape. PHDCII’s Ranjit Mehta emerged as a key voice, applauding government interventions that have supercharged the MSME sector and elevated India to the third spot among global startup hubs.

In an IANS interview, Mehta detailed pivotal schemes like the Credit Guarantee Scheme, GeM portal’s procurement revolution, and NSIC-led tech hubs that have democratized opportunities for startups. These initiatives have bridged critical gaps in funding, technology, and market reach.

The numbers tell a compelling story: from a modest 400 startups in 2016 under ‘Startup India’, the ecosystem has ballooned to over 1.5 lakh today. This growth trajectory mirrors India’s ambition to lead in innovation.

Labeling MSMEs as the economic spine with 1.1 crore-plus jobs, Mehta stressed their centrality to ‘Developed India’ goals. Yet, he cautioned that policy efficacy depends on grassroots execution, urging states and districts to support these widespread enterprises.

Building awareness and cluster-based ecosystems will unlock MSME potential, enabling small players to scale and compete globally. Mehta lauded the summit’s role in fostering dialogue and momentum.

Looking ahead, a fortified MSME-startup synergy promises to catapult India’s GDP, job creation, and global standing, marking a pivotal chapter in the nation’s entrepreneurial saga.
