The high-octane election campaigns in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu drew to a close on Tuesday evening, marking the mandatory 48-hour ‘silence period’ before April 23 voting. West Bengal kicks off its polls with 152 seats in phase one, drawing 1,478 candidates and 3.60 crore voters. Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, goes to the hustings for all 234 assembly seats simultaneously, with 4,023 hopefuls and a voter base of 5.73 crore.

Election authorities have fortified security arrangements across both states, extending surveillance to online spaces to curb any violations. Party heavyweights had mounted aggressive final pushes, but now strict rules prohibit any further canvassing.

In West Bengal, women’s votes—numbering 1.75 crore—are under intense scrutiny amid reservation controversies, potentially tipping the scales. The phase one battleground encompasses diverse regions: eight districts from North Bengal, three from South Bengal, and five from Junglemahal, listing hotspots like Murshidabad’s 22 seats, Cooch Behar’s 9, and others up to Bankura’s 12.

Tamil Nadu’s single-phase showdown promises high drama, particularly with the rise of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Buoyed by strong grassroots support in multiple constituencies, the party’s performance could disrupt traditional equations between DMK and AIADMK.

From deploying additional forces to tech-driven monitoring, every precaution is in place for peaceful polls. As candidates await judgment day, the focus shifts to voter turnout and the unfolding political narrative that could reshape governance in these southern and eastern powerhouses.
