In a bold step towards eradicating begging, India’s government reported remarkable achievements under the SMILE initiative on Monday. Over 31,000 individuals involved in mendicancy have been identified, with nearly 10,000 now on the path to self-reliance through rehabilitation.

Central to this effort are the Garima Homes—21 facilities spanning 17 states that serve as sanctuaries for transgender people cast out by society. Approved expansions include three more homes set for August 2025. Residents access comprehensive amenities: nutritious food, healthcare, leisure, and vocational training, all operated by community organizations backed by DoSJE funding.

Since its 2022 inception, SMILE has pioneered a nationwide framework for identifying, rescuing, and empowering the destitute. Services span psychological counseling, education, skills enhancement, and employment linkages, aiming for financial autonomy.

Health equity takes center stage with Ayushman Bharat TG Plus offering transgender citizens ₹5 lakh yearly coverage for critical procedures like surgeries and therapies. The ₹390 crore outlay from 2021-2026 underscores commitment to this integrated model, addressing identity, wellness, learning, work, and housing in tandem.

Educational aid flows to transgender scholars via scholarships up to postgraduate levels. Parallel tracks target beggars for full reintegration, envisioning a mendicancy-free nation. Notably, 18 pilot entrepreneurship ventures are equipping 1,800 transgender entrepreneurs with essential business acumen.

As these efforts gain momentum, SMILE redefines social justice, proving that holistic intervention can dismantle cycles of exclusion and poverty.
