Moscow’s diplomatic channels buzzed as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov engaged in an intensive phone dialogue with Iran’s Seyed Abbas Araghchi. At the forefront were navigational freedoms in the Strait of Hormuz and developments in Iran’s nuclear activities, as per the Russian Foreign Ministry’s announcement.

The conversation extended to broader West Asian concerns, advocating for an end to conflicts, military de-escalation, and political normalization. Russia reiterated its backing for mediation roles and committed to collaborative diplomacy for enduring regional peace.

Particular emphasis was placed on safeguarding Russian ships and shipments transiting the Hormuz Strait, underscoring its indispensable role in the global energy market.

Just days earlier, on April 27, President Putin hosted Araghchi in St. Petersburg in a meeting flanked by top Russian officials including Lavrov, Yuri Ushakov, and Igor Kostyukov. Iran’s delegation featured Gharibabadi and Jalali.

Putin voiced strong support for deepening strategic partnerships with Iran and joint initiatives to quell West Asian unrest. He conveyed confidence in Iran’s resilience against adversities, paving the way for stability. Quoting Putin, ‘We will do everything in our power to benefit you and the region’s people for prompt peace restoration.’

The session opened with Putin mentioning a personal message from Supreme Leader Khamenei, reinforcing the personal stakes in these high-level exchanges. As tensions simmer, Russia and Iran appear aligned in countering instability.
