Spokesperson Carlotta Wolf painted a grim picture in Geneva, explaining how insecurity near the Strait of Hormuz is choking off vital sea lanes and inflating prices for everything from fuel to foodstuffs.
Freight charges have ballooned by up to 18% since fighting escalated, pushing UNHCR’s logistics capacity down to 77% from 97% earlier this year. Vulnerable populations – think refugees in camps and newly displaced families – bear the brunt as essential supplies grow scarce and pricier.
Aid groups are scrambling, forced to detour via expensive, time-consuming routes like the Cape of Good Hope, which tacks on 25 extra days. Wolf highlighted a stark example: shipments from Dubai warehouses to Sudan and Chad now cost double, straining budgets and timelines.
Africa feels the pinch hardest. Kenya’s UNHCR hub is reeling from 15% fuel hikes, slowing trucks to Ethiopia, Congo, and South Sudan amid growing shortages. In Sudan, aid transport expenses have doubled recently, underscoring the crisis’s depth.
This isn’t sustainable. Continued Middle East volatility risks amplifying delays, costs, and capacity crunches, potentially dooming relief efforts in forgotten hotspots. UNHCR urges swift action to safeguard these critical lifelines before the human toll mounts uncontrollably.
