India Names Dinesh Trivedi as High Commissioner to Bangladesh Amid Ties Revival

New Delhi is bolstering its diplomatic footprint in South Asia with the appointment of veteran politician Dinesh Trivedi as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh. The decision, revealed by the MEA on Monday, underscores New Delhi’s intent to revitalize ties with its eastern neighbor.

Trivedi’s nomination was hinted at earlier by BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya, who congratulated him on social media on April 19. The formal MEA statement affirmed that the 75-year-old will soon take charge, succeeding diplomat Pranay Verma.

With a career spanning decades, Trivedi has worn many hats: from Barrackpore MP to Rajya Sabha stalwart, and key ministerial roles. His 2011 stint as Railway Minister ended abruptly due to the fare increase controversy, which irked TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, leading to his resignation.

Jumping ship from TMC to BJP in 2021, Trivedi embodies the political shifts that define his journey. This appointment arrives against the backdrop of strained India-Bangladesh relations post-Sheikh Hasina’s exit and the interim Yunus regime’s challenges, including minority concerns.

The landscape shifted with BNP leader Tarique Rahman’s election as Prime Minister. His April 8 meeting with EAM S. Jaishankar in Delhi focused on mending fences, trade enhancement, and mutual interests. Jaishankar later highlighted the productive dialogue on X, stressing ongoing collaboration.

As Bangladesh’s first high-level visit post-BNP takeover, it signaled optimism. Trivedi’s political savvy and regional insights make him an ideal envoy to foster stability, counter past frictions, and advance shared goals in connectivity, security, and economic cooperation.

This strategic pick reflects India’s proactive diplomacy, aiming to turn a page in a vital neighborhood relationship fraught with history and potential.
