Port Sudan became the venue for a pivotal diplomatic engagement as India and Sudan conducted their ninth round of Foreign Office Consultations on May 4. The consultations aimed at fortifying relations through enhanced cooperation in diverse fields.
Dr. M. Suresh Kumar from India’s MEA spearheaded the delegation, matched by Sudan’s Ambassador Mawiya Usman Khalid Mohammad. Key topics ranged from political dialogue and economic partnerships to advancements in health, education, energy, agriculture, mining, and digital infrastructure. Special emphasis was placed on SMEs and cultural exchanges.
Sudan once again voiced strong condemnation of the Pulwama terror attack, vowing united action against terrorism alongside India. The talks delved into regional dynamics, highlighting India’s role in Sudan’s capacity building via ITEC and ICCR initiatives.
High-level meetings included discussions with Health Minister Dr. Haitham Mohammad Ibrahim, who lauded India’s support in healthcare, notably the artificial limb initiative. The delegation also engaged with Red Sea State’s Governor Mustafa Mohammad Noor.
Future plans include the tenth consultation in New Delhi. These talks reflect deep-rooted history: ancient connections via Mesopotamia, and post-independence milestones like Sukumar Sen’s oversight of Sudan’s 1953 elections.
This renewed vigor in India-Sudan relations signals robust diplomacy, poised to drive sustainable development and security collaboration in Africa and beyond.
