China Gains Ground in Myanmar as Junta Names Pro-Beijing Foreign Minister

The appointment of Tin Maung Swe, a former brigadier general and seasoned diplomat from Myanmar’s Beijing embassy, to the foreign minister post signals a strategic embrace of China by President Min Aung Hlaing’s administration. This development, highlighted in a sharp analysis by Bertil Lintner in The Irrawaddy, comes as Myanmar’s military rulers navigate renewed isolation.

Lintner recounts how the 1988 massacre isolated the junta, pushing it into China’s orbit. Over-reliance on Beijing eventually compelled reforms to woo back Western partners. The 2010 elections then empowered civil society, leading to NLD triumphs in 2012 and 2015.

The 2021 coup reversed those gains, prompting fresh sanctions. Now, the regime is playing a smarter game: broadening ties while prioritizing China, which has become more assertive in its influence.

Why the obsession? Geography. China’s vast landmass craves sea outlets for its export-driven economy. Myanmar uniquely provides Indian Ocean access sans India, offering an alternative to vulnerable straits.

With the military digging in, public dissent sidelined, the report paints a grim picture of repeating cycles. Tin Maung Swe’s rise could unlock massive infrastructure deals, cementing China’s foothold and challenging U.S. and Indian interests in Southeast Asia. Regional stability hangs in the balance.
