A wave of violence has swept through Bangladesh, targeting Sufi shrines and graves since the explosive July 2024 uprising. Reports reveal 97 documented attacks involving destruction, firebombing, and theft up to the interim regime’s close, sparking outrage over unchecked impunity.

On April 18, Daulatpur in Kushtia witnessed horror when Shamiem Reja, a revered figure, was savagely killed after a mob frenzy triggered by blasphemy whispers. This case, one of just 12 formally registered, highlights the system’s failure—minimal progress in investigations and zero major arrests.

Data from August 2024 to April 2025 paints a grim picture: over 100 incidents nationwide. Dhaka division bore the brunt with 50+ hits, Narayanganj leading at 11, followed by Dhaka’s nine. Chittagong saw 27, devastating landmarks in Cumilla (17) and Chattogram (4).

HRSS documents three fatalities and 200+ wounded, while researcher group ‘Makam’ notes two deaths and 180 injuries in Dhaka alone. Dhamrai’s three assaults during interim rule ended in inaction, with shrines still closed.

Analysts blame religious divides, social intolerance, viral rumors, politics, and turf wars. The lack of prosecutions has emboldened attackers, creating terror in vulnerable neighborhoods. Urgent reforms in policing and courts are essential to restore faith in the rule of law.
