  • India Vs England 2nd Test Probable Playing 11s: Will Rohit Sharma Back Sarfaraz Khan, Washington Sundar On A Possible Rank Turner At Vizag? , cricket news

India captain Rohit Sharma has big calls to take ahead of the 2nd Test vs England that starts on February 2 in Visakhapatnam. With Virat Kohli absent, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul injured, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer completely out of form, the batting order looks very thin. Two players who have scored tons of runs in domestic cricket – Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar – are in the squad but can Rohit take the big call of playing one or both of them in this crucial tie? On one hand, he has inexperienced but talented batters, on the other hand, he has proven batters who are currently short of runs. This is no sweet headache and it will be fascinating to see what Rohit Sharma says when he attends the pre-match press conference a day before about the possible playing 11.

Gill and Iyer have not made runs for a long time in Test cricket. History says that head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit like to take small risks while being safe by covering most of the bases. Batting is one such base. Going by what batting coach Vikram Rathour said either one of them could be picked for the Test. He said that choosing who to play between Sarfaraz and Patidar will be quite tricky if only one of them has to play but the final call rests with Dravid and Rohit. Rathour also said that he is sure of his struggling batters will find a way to come out of the slump.

In all likelihood, if either of Sarfaraz or Patidar are to play, they will come in at the cost of Gill, whose hards hands are not helping him tackling the spin bowling. Visakhapatnam is expected to be a rank turner and Shreyas Iyer is a quality player of spin bowling. The management might want Iyer to bat a little up at No 3 and put either of Sarfaraz or Patidar at No 4. Washington Sundar could be placed in Jadeja’s place while KS Bharat may retain his place as playing Dhruv Jurel could prove to be too much of a risk.

As far as England are concerned, their head coach Brendon McCullum had said that they are ready to play an all-spin bowling attack if the pitch at Vizag turns out to be a turner. They will not hesitate in dropping their only pacer in the first Test Mark Wood to make way for off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who could make his debut in 2nd Test.

India Probable Playing 11s: Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan/Rajat Patidar, Washington Sundar, KS Bharat, Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav.

England Probable Playing 11s: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Ben Foakes (wk), Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, Mark Wood/Shoaib Bashir, Jack Leach

  • Injured Washington Sundar likely to miss Sunrisers Hyderabad’s next two matches

    By PTI

NAVI MUMBAI: All-rounder Washington Sundar is likely to miss at least the next two IPL matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad after suffering split webbing in his bowling hand, head coach Tom Moody has said.

A disciplined bowling effort followed by skipper Kane Williamson’s half-century helped SRH beat Gujarat Titans by eight wickets at the D.Y. Patil Stadium on Monday night.

During the match however, Washington got injured and couldn’t bowl his full quota of overs.

His three wicketless overs – two of which were in the powerplay – went for just 14 runs.

“Washington has torn the webbing in his right hand, between his thumb and first finger. We must monitor that over the next two-three days. Hopefully, it isn’t a significant blow. I’d imagine it’d take probably a week or so to settle down,” SRH coach Moody said after the win.

In their next two upcoming outings, Sunrisers will take on Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Playing for a team that is thin on spin bowling, Washington has been the lone specialist tweaker for the Sunrisers so far this season.

Since giving away 47 runs in his three wicketless overs against Rajasthan Royals in his team’s opener, Washington has picked 4 for 63 across 11 overs.

Laid low by injury and illness over the last few months.

Washington had missed India’s three T20Is against West Indies in February after suffering a hamstring while fielding during the third ODI in Ahmedabad.

He had also missed the second half of IPL in the UAE last year after hurting his finger.

Meanwhile, the injury to batter Rahul Tripathi, which forced him to retire hurt midway through their chase against the Titans, isn’t a serious one.

After falling on the ground right after hitting a six, he needed medical attention.

“He’s fine, he’s just getting cramped,” Moody said.

“It’s humid conditions and we get him to run to hotspots, so he covers a lot of ground in the first two-three overs.

“That is something we may need to look at to make sure we get the maximum out of him with the bat because obviously, he is a very valuable player for us.”

  • IPL 2021: Playing with Virat Kohli gets the best out of any cricketer, says Washington Sundar

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar has impressed one and all with his performances in the last few months. Be it with the ball in hand or the bat, the youngster has made match-winning contributions.

After a good time with the national team — starting with his Test debut against Australia at the Gabba — Sundar is now looking to make it count for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).

In an interaction with ANI, Washington opened up about his bond with skipper Virat Kohli, his hopes from the RCB unit in the 14th edition of the IPL, and why he chose to name his pet ‘Gabba’.

“I think Virat has been helping me a lot on different occasions. The fact that I have been playing closely with him for the last 4-5 years has done wonders for me. I can see him closely and see how he goes about different scenarios both on and off the field, what he does to be what he is right now, so many things I have learnt from him over the years, that has definitely helped me become a better cricketer,” said Sundar.

“The fact that I got to play with him, someone of his stature could help you out in different phases of life, it definitely gets the best out of any cricketer. The last four months have been good for me and I hope I have a better season going ahead. It takes a lot for a captain to throw the ball to a finger spinner especially in the first six overs. I think I really need to be thankful to the captain, getting success from such a situation has made me a better cricketer and also it has given me a lot of confidence. In that sense, Virat has really helped me and it has also helped me to evolve as a T20 bowler. I have been loving the challenge of bowling in the first six overs,” he added.

Sundar has always had talent with the bat and this year, he set the international stage on fire after his 50+ scores in the Tests against Australia and England.

“I think I have always wanted to be a batsman who the team would love to have on the field. I would also get a lot of opportunities and in that case, I can win games for the team as well. Wherever the team wants me to bat, I am ready to bat there, that is the kind of cricketer I want to be,” said the 21-year-old.

RCB is yet to win an IPL title but the side has got off to an excellent start this season after recording wins in its first three matches. The addition of Glenn Maxwell has done wonders for the side and add to this, the consistency of the ever-reliant AB de Villiers.

“I think we have started really well in the first three games, the way we have played, we have dominated in every game and definitely we have a well-balanced side this year. All that matters is how we turn up on the field and how we react to different situations. There is a reason for Maxwell going for so much money, I think he will definitely help RCB win a lot of games this year. The way he has turned up for RCB this year has been amazing, all three games he has been successful with the bat. We are very confident of him winning a lot of games for RCB. I think the side has found the right man to help RCB win a lot of games,” said Sundar.

“Ab de Villiers is a freak, to be honest. You cannot really learn a lot of things from the way he bats because he just does everything his way. I think, one thing I could say I have learnt from him over the years is the fact that how he stays calm. He knows how much people expect from him, he has been doing really well for RCB over many years,” he added.

Talking about why he named his pet ‘Gabba’, Sundar said: “Gabba Test was a pure dream come true moment for me. I bought a dog, as a family we were looking out for a name for him and we thought Gabba would relate to him a lot because as I said Gabba was a dream come true. Playing my first Test there was really special and everything about that Test series was amazing for me. There are a lot of reasons for me to name my dog Gabba.”

On Tuesday, global sports brand PUMA signed a long-term partnership deal with Sundar and Devdutt Padikkal. As a result, the duo joins PUMA’s impressive roaster of cricketers that include Indian captain Virat Kohli and wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul. Commenting on the association, Sundar said: “It definitely feels great to be on the same brand with some of the superstars in different sports. Definitely, I believe that I would be able to take the legacy forward as they have in the past. I think it adds a lot of value, more than anything, it brings out the best of ourselves.”

  • Will carry forward confidence gained playing Test cricket in IPL: RCB spinner Washington Sundar

    By PTI
MUMBAI: India and Royal Challengers Bangalore off-spinner Washington Sundar on Wednesday said he will carry forward the confidence and self-belief he gained while playing Test cricket into the ongoing Indian Premier League.

Washington made his Test debut earlier this year against Australia in Brisbane.

He scored a fluent 62 and snared three wickets in the first innings.

In the second essay, he played a game-changing 22 on the final day to help India seal a memorable victory.

“I think performing well in the Test cricket definitely boosts a lot of confidence for any cricketer,” Washington said at the virtual product launch of the “Soundcore Liberty Air 2 Pro.”

“And getting to play Test cricket at the highest level for the Indian cricket team, which has been really doing well, especially in the last few years is a dream come true moment for any youngster and that has happened to me,” he added.

The 21-year-old was also a part of the Indian Test side that defeated England 3-1 last month.

“We played against two top quality sides — Australia and England. Performing against them and winning games against them gave me a lot of confidence and self belief.

“So, yes that confidence I will definitely take it forward and also the momentum I would really love to take forward throughout the IPL and the games to come,” he added.

Talking about the IPL, which is being held behind closed doors for a second successive edition, Washington said: “It has been two years now.

The last IPL was also played behind closed doors.

“I think we are very much used to it, though we would love to have a lot of crowd supporting us and I know the kind of energy crowds bring in for every game is amazing.

“But given the scenario, we are happy that we could play cricket,” he signed off.
