In what was a strange moment in the game, Stokes decided to roll his arms finally in the series and struck gold. He bowled a peach, getting some help by the crack on the surface, and got the ball the move just slightly away to hit the top of off and Rohit could not do anything about it but smile all the way to the dressing room an even the English players were shocked by the development.

Earlier, Kuldeep Yadav and R Ashwin had shone with the ball to bowl out England for just 218 after Stokes won the toss and opted to bat first. Kuldeep completed an impressive five-wicket haul while Ashwin got four wickets. Ravindra Jadeja got one wicket as pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj went wicketless at the end of the England's first innings.

India have an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. England are playing to restore their pride and prove that they are not as bad a side as the scoreline looks like. India, on the other hand, are now playing for more points that strengthens their position in the World Tets Championship Points Table.

Gill narrowly avoided an LBW dismissal early on, as the TV umpire detected an inside edge. Another tense moment occurred in the following over when Anderson’s incoming delivery hit Gill’s knee roll, but the umpire’s decision favored the batter.

Despite these close calls, Gill’s confidence appeared to soar. He took charge, smashing a straight six off Shoaib Bashir and skillfully using his footwork against the spinners. Gill’s assertive play was evident as he confidently struck a boundary down the ground against leggie Rehan Ahmed and followed it up with a cover drive to reach his half-century.

Gill effortlessly shifted gears, achieving the milestone in a mere sixty deliveries. The visible relief on the young batter’s face was undeniable, considering the scrutiny he had faced for his low scores in Test cricket. Prior to this Test, Gill’s career average had dipped below 30.

  • WATCH: Shubman Gill’s Special Request To Captain Rohit Sharma Following Discussion Of Batting At Virat Kohli’s Position | cricket news

India’s young batting sensation Shubman Gill was given the Polly Umrigar award for best men’s cricketer of the year 2022-23 at the BCCI awards on Tuesday (January 23). Gill had a stellar year in all three formats scoring a remarkable figure of 1,583 runs in ODI cricket with an average of 63.36 and strike-rate of 105.45. Arguably, Gill is on the right track as last year he became the fastest to reach 2,000 ODI runs which he did in just 38 innings during a World Cup match against the Netherlands.

Gill and Harsha Bhogle had a quick chat after the young batsman was handed the award by BCCI secretary Jay Shah in which they discussed batting at number 3 which was Virat Kohli’s position for almost a long period of time and fielding at short-leg. Gill make a cheeky request to captain Rohit Sharma when Harsha Bhogle told him that as he gets senior he will be moved from that position.

Playing for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Gill maintained his impressive form. With three hundreds among his 890 runs, the second-highest total in an IPL season, he was awarded the Orange Cap. Notable was his performance in the Qualifier 2 match, where he hit the greatest individual score in IPL playoff history with 129 runs.

Former India cricketers Ravi Shastri and Farokh Engineer were awarded the prestigious Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday during the Naman Awards.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Roger Binny and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah presented the award to Shastri and Farokh. In Shastri’s international cricket career which panned from 1981 to 1992, Shastri served as a highly useful all-rounder, capable of playing any role for his team and grinding it out in tough situations. He often played as an opener or in the middle order while batting and could deliver some crucial overs of left-arm spin too.

Shastri had a solid Test record. In 80 Test matches, he scored 3,830 runs at an average of 35.79. He scored 11 centuries and 12 fifties in 121 innings of his career, with the best individual score of 206. The all-rounder has also taken 151 wickets, with best bowling figures of 5/75.

Shastri is part of the team which won the 50-over Cricket World Cup in 1983. In the tournament, he scored 40 runs in five innings, with the best score of 17 and took a total of four wickets, with the best bowling spell of 3/26.

Another career-defining moment came for Shastri in 1985 when he played a big role in his team’s win at the World Championship of Cricket, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.

Shastri won the ‘Man of the Tournament’ award for scoring 182 runs in five matches at an average of 45.50, with three fifties. He also took eight wickets, finishing as the joint-third-highest wicket-taker. (MS Dhoni Did Not Attend Ram Temple Inauguration, Wife Sakshi Shares Pic Of ‘Ram Lalla’ On Insta; Check Here)

After the conclusion of his international cricket career in 1992, he was heard as a commentator. His authoritative voice, enthusiasm and knowledge of the game make him one of the country’s most beloved commentators. His calls during India’s winning moments in T20 World Cup 2007 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 still live in the minds of millions.

On the other hand, Farokh was well known for his craftmanship with the bat and agility behind the stumps. His skillset made him best suited for keeping to the legendary spin quartet of Bedi, Prasanna, Chandrasekhar and Venkataraghavan.

Farokh during his career played 46 Test matches for India and amassed 2611 runs which included two centuries and 16 half-centuries.

His most memorable moment as a batsman was against West Indies at Madras in 1966–67. He scored 94 before lunch on the first day against the iconic pacers Wes Hall, Charles Griffith, Gary Sobers and spinner Richard Gibbs. The list of award winners includes Lala Amarnath, Syed Mushtaq Ali, Vijay Hazare, Bishan Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and many more. (With ANI inputs)

  • Fear of Unknown: CSK meets ‘CSK Lite’ as Dhoni faces ‘Gill Test’

    By PTI

CHENNAI: The astute tactician in Mahendra Singh Dhoni will dig deep into his reserves to counter Indian cricket’s new ‘Crown Prince’ Shubman Gill as four-time champions Chennai Super Kings will meet their match in current title holders Gujarat Titans in Qualifier-1 of the IPL here on Tuesday.

Gill, who almost single-handedly knocked out a star-studded Royal Challengers Bangalore with a century for the keeps, has overshadowed Virat Kohli and will certainly force one of India’s greatest captains to go back to the drawing board and make plans for him.

Gill is in the midst of a dream season and what will be Dhoni’s tactical ploy to stop the dashing ‘Mohali Marauder’ is there to be seen.

This season, Gujarat Titans haven’t played at the Chepauk, which hasn’t behaved in a singular manner during CSK’s seven home games and that prompted head coach Stephen Fleming to raise apprehensions about what to expect.

What makes this battle even more interesting is the fact that GT is a team that seems closest to being a proto-type of what CSK had been all these years in IPL.

A solid management and an administration team that stays in the background and never interferes in cricketing matters, which is left to the trio of Ashish Nehra, Gary Kirsten and Vikram Solanki.

A captain, who swears that his understanding of leadership is cut from Dhoni’s ‘captaincy cloth’, and head coach Nehra, who just like his former teammate doesn’t believe in too many changes even if a couple of games go wrong.

They don’t field players based on their auction worth — remember CSK bought Krishnappa Gowtham for nearly Rs 10 crore and he got a single game as he didn’t fit the combination.

Similarly, GT has current India T20 pacer Shivam Mavi on its roster for a whopping Rs 6 crore but the team management has preferred veteran Mohit Sharma, who is executing the slower deliveries beautifully.

It’s all about who fits what role. So, it becomes more interesting when two teams with similar philosophies are pitted against each other.

The teams don’t make long-term promises that are difficult to fulfil but focus on immediate processes and know the roles of players required for slots.

For Gujarat, tackling the slowness of the Chepauk track will be a challenge and how well they negotiate Deepak Chahar’s powerplay overs and Matheesha Pathirana’s slingers at the back-end, will determine the outcome of the match.

And herein, Pandya and Nehra will find Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka’s inputs handy as he has handled both Pathirana and spinner Maheesh Theekshana for the national team.

While Shanaka might be used more as an all-rounder, Titans depending on the toss can also try out left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore, who knows these conditions well.

There is a chance that Irishman Joshua Little will be back in playing XI in place of Shanaka and Sai Kishore comes in place of Yash Dayal, who is yet to get back his confidence after the five sixes assault on him by his statemate Rinku Singh.

For CSK, a good start by the crack pair of Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad will be important.

But at the Chepauk, even Ajinkya Rahane could become a factor while Shivam Dube would love to add to his 33 sixes for the season.

Conway and Gaikwad have provided brisk and substantial starts for CSK, but the middle order hasn’t exactly got going.

With GT bowling led by Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan (24 wickets each so far) things won’t be easy for the home team’s batters, Conway and Gaikwad included.

How the CSK opening duo handles the relentless Shami may prove vital and it would be important for the underperforming middle order to step up in a crunch game.

The pitches at Chepauk so far have been a bit up and down, with a few being slow in nature while some have been good to bat on.

CSK head coach Fleming said as much after the win over Delhi Capitals, claiming that the team is unsure about the conditions (at home).

If a sluggish pitch is rolled out for the match, the spinners in the two teams would have a huge part to play.

If CSK has Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali and Theekshana, the Titans boast of a line-up that includes Rashid and Noor Ahmad.

  • Dubai wicket wasn’t easiest to hit spinners: KKR batsman Shubman Gill

    By ANI

DUBAI: After playing a knock of 57 runs against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opening batter Shubman Gill revealed that the pitch was not the easiest to hit spinners for constant boundaries.

“It was important to keep the wickets in hand, and when the balls and runs were closer then just take it easy. It was important to assess the wicket. It wasn’t easy to hit the spinners on this wicket. I was targeting the shorter side, and the leg-side was shorter than the off-side at one end. When I didn’t have much runs under the belt, you don’t want the opposition to gain the upper hand,” Gill told host broadcaster Star Sports after KKR’s six-wicket win over SRH.

“When you play on slower wickets, it’s more important to play with the wrists and that comes naturally to me. I took on the extra pace (of Umran) today and it came off in this game, but in another game it might not,” he added.

Gill played a knock of 57 runs as KKR defeated SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets with two balls to spare here at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. With this win, KKR consolidated its position at the fourth spot and the side now has 12 points from 13 games.

Earlier, a spirited bowling performance helped KKR restrict SRH to 115/8 in the allotted twenty overs. For Eoin Morgan-led side, Tim Southee, Shivam Mavi, and Varun Chakravarthy returned with two wickets each while for SRH, Kane Williamson top-scored with a knock of 26 runs.

KKR will next square off against Rajasthan Royals on Thursday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

  • Shubman Gill will be one of the highest run-scorers by end of IPL, says David Hussey

    By ANI
MUMBAI: After stumbling to a six-wicket loss against Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) chief mentor David Hussey said that it was not a deliberate plan to play the first six overs cautiously.

Sanju Samson and David Miller played unbeaten knocks of 42 and 24 respectively as Rajasthan Royals defeated KKR by six wickets with seven balls to spare on Saturday here at the Wankhede Stadium. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube also chipped in with 22 runs each to guide Rajasthan to a comfortable victory.

“It was not a deliberate plan to go that slow but full credit to Rajasthan Royals bowlers, they did not allow us to play KKR cricket up front. Under Brendon McCullum as coach, we like to play with freedom and take the game on and provide a highly entertaining brand of cricket, unfortunately, we did not do that. We have got the next game against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad in a few days time,” said Hussey while replying to an ANI query during a virtual press conference.

Earlier, a spirited bowling performance helped Rajasthan Royals restrict KKR to 133/9 in the allotted twenty overs. For Sanju Samson-led side, Chris Morris scalped four wickets. For KKR, Rahul Tripathi and Dinesh Karthik played knocks of 36 and 25 respectively.

When asked about Shubman Gill’s form, Hussey said: “He is a star player, he took the Test match arena by storm in Australia. He is very specific and he has a great work ethic. All I can say is that form will come and go, class is always permanent. He is one class individual, both on and off the field. Mark my words, he will be one of the highest-scoring batsmen by the end of the tournament. He is an absolute class act.”

Answering why Andre Russell came behind Dinesh Karthik and Sunil Narine, Hussey said: “It’s tough one really, we needed to get a partnership going when Andre Russell was ready to come in. Russell is in his scintillating best when he maybe has three-four overs left. In a perfect world, he can go at number three and score 200 I guess, but wasn’t to be. We will look at all strategies going ahead, everything is on the table.”

“Lockie Ferguson is at the peak of his powers, he is a class act and he is an excellent player for New Zealand. He bowled well for KKR last year in UAE. He is going to push for selection for the next games. Everything is on the table in terms of selection,” he added.

KKR is now at the bottom of the IPL points table with just 2 points from 5 games. The side will next take on Punjab Kings on Monday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
