    Express News Service

RANCHI: The police have finally arrested Sunil Tiwari, the political advisor of former Jharkhand chief minister and BJP legislative leader Babulal Marandi, for sexually harassing an 18-year-old tribal girl who was working as a domestic help in his house.

The arrest warrant was issued against Tiwari after the girl from Khunti filed an FIR at the Argora police station. In the FIR, she has alleged that he forced her into having physical relations with him and threatened to kill her if she discloses anything about these incidents.

The girl has also recorded her statement before the court under Section 164 after undergoing medical tests. She shared her ordeal with her parents a few days ago following which they decided to file an FIR.

Tiwari had moved a petition seeking anticipatory bail in the high court after a lower court cancelled it. However, before the court could make a decision on it, the police had already arrested him.

Even as the police are tightlipped on the incident, some sources have informed that the former political advisor was arrested from Etawah in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has issued a notice to Jharkhand DGP and Senior Superintendent of Police, Ranchi, after the girl’s father filed a complaint alleging that the police took his daughter away and presented her before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) without mentioning any reason.

He further stated that the police also took away his family members from their house on Independence Day without informing him about their whereabouts. The girl was later produced before the CWC on August 16. It was claimed that she had been staying at the residence of Tiwari for an “unusually long time” despite not being a family member.

RANCHI: A Ranchi Court has issued an arrest warrant Sunil Tiwari — political advisor of former Jharkhand Chief Minister and BJP legislative party leader Babulal Marandi — for sexually harassing an 18-year-old tribal girl. Tiwari is likely to be arrested at any point in time as the arrest warrant has already been received by the investigating officer.

The girl in her FIR alleged that Tiwari forced her into having physical relations with him and threatened to kill her if anyone learned about this. She has also recorded her statement before the court under Section 164 after undergoing medical tests.

The girl, according to police, shared the ordeal with her parents a few days ago following which they decided to file FIR in this regard.

Meanwhile, The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has issued a notice to Jharkhand DGP and Senior Superintendent of Police, Ranchi, after the father of the girl filed a complaint alleging that the police took his daughter away and presented her before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) without mentioning any reason.

The girl was later produced before the CWC on August 16. It was claimed she had been staying at the residence of Tiwari for an “unusually long time” despite not being a family member.

Marandi, when asked, alleged the FIR was filed against Tiwary after the latter knocked on the door of the apex court demanding a direction to the Mumbai High Court to hear the matter related to allegations of sexual exploitation against the Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

  • #MeToo movement: Journalist Priya Ramani acquitted in criminal defamation case by MJ Akbar

    Express News Service
NEW DELHI: Stressing that women cannot be punished for raising their voice against sexual abuse, a Delhi court on Wednesday acquitted journalist Priya Ramani in a defamation suit filed by former Union minister M J Akbar contesting her allegations of sexual harassment by him in the past.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey said, “The right of reputation cannot be protected at the cost of the right of life and dignity of woman as guaranteed in Indian Constitution under Article 21 and right of equality before law and equal protection of law as guaranteed under Article 14 of the Constitution.”

The court accepted Ramani’s  contention that Akbar wasn’t a man of stellar reputation. In its 91-page verdict, the court said, “It cannot be ignored that most of the time, the offence of sexual harassment and sexual abuse (was) committed in the close doors or privately. Sometimes the victims herself does not understand what is happening to them or what is happening to them is wrong. Despite how well respected some persons are in the society, they in their personal lives, could show extreme cruelty to females.”

The court took note of the systematic abuse at the workplace due to lack of grievance redressal mechanisms at the time Priya Ramani and witness Ghazala Wahab were allegedly sexually harassed. “Time has come for society to understand sexual abuse and harassment and its implications on the victim,” the court said, adding most women do not speak about it because of social stigma.

“This judgment is a validation of the stand taken by us and all women during the #Metoo campaign,” Ramani’s lawyer Rebecca John later said. Ramani had in 2018 made allegations of sexual harassment against Akbar in wake of the #MeToo movement.
