The Kerala High Court has significantly eased bail conditions for Malayalam rapper Vedan, whose real name is Hirandas, allowing him to embark on an international concert tour. The High Court bench, presided over by Justice C. Pratheep Kumar, removed specific restrictions previously imposed by the Sessions Court. These included the ban on leaving the state of Kerala and the requirement for weekly appearances before the investigating officer (IO).
This judicial modification now permits Vedan to travel for scheduled performances in Dubai, Qatar, France, and Germany from November 23 to December 20. The court’s decision was influenced by the prosecution’s lack of objection to the modified terms, provided Vedan continues to cooperate with the investigation. He is now required to inform the IO in advance of any international travel plans and report to authorities as needed, with prior notice.
The case originated in December 2022 following a complaint by a research scholar in Dalit music. The complainant alleged sexual harassment at Vedan’s residence. He was initially granted pre-arrest bail by the Sessions Court but contested the stringent bail conditions. The High Court acknowledged Vedan’s adherence to bail terms for the past six weeks, deeming the easing of restrictions appropriate while maintaining oversight of his movements.
