  • Politicians get into political slugfest a day after hoarding collapse claim 14 lives in Ghatkopar – The Economic Times Video

A day after a hoarding collapse in Mumbai killed 14 persons and injured several others, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya asked how the permission for erecting the billboard was given by a police officer when the city civic body is the authority for it. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the former MP also claimed permissions for the hoarding and a petrol pump (where the billboard collapsed) were given when Uddhav Thackeray was the chief minister of Maharashtra.

  • Ayodhya: Maharashtra cabinet gives nod to 300-acre park in Mumbai; guesthouse for pilgrims in Ayodhya

Just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Maharashtra cabinet on Monday cleared 18 proposals, including the development of a 300-acre park in Mumbai and the construction of a guesthouse in Ayodhya for pilgrims from the state. As per an official statement, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chaired a cabinet meeting, during which he cleared the urban development department’s proposal to develop a 300-acre landscaped park along the lines of New York’s Central Park.

The cabinet approved the public works department’s proposed construction of a guesthouse in Ayodhya for pilgrims from the state visiting the newly inaugurated Ram temple and other sites in the Uttar Pradesh town, it said.

Among other decisions, the cabinet also cleared a proposal by the women and child development to include names of mothers in all state government documents. The department had earlier said that this decision could be seen as a step towards giving more recognition to mothers as government documents traditionally carry the father’s name.

The cabinet also approved the housing department’s proposal to reduce stamp duty for residents of the BDD chawl and slums and a plan for permanent houses for families of workers from 58 textile mills, which were once operational in the city.

  • Maratha quota: Special session of Maharashtra Assembly to commence today, Maratha quota likely on agenda

The Maharashtra government will hold a special Vidhan Sabha session for one day on Tuesday to hold discussion on the Maratha reservation issue.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stressed on Friday that reservation to Marathas will be given according to the terms of the law after presenting the report in during the special assembly session called for February 20.

“The survey has been conducted on nearly 2-2.5 crore people… Keeping in mind that the OBC community is not left behind in the process, the government will present the report to the cabinet committee. On February 20, we have called a special session of the assembly, after which the Maratha reservation will be given according to the terms of the law…,” CM Shinde said. The decision to hold the session was taken at the weekly Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

“The cabinet meeting has given its nod to convene a one-day special session of the legislature on Tuesday, February 20, to discuss the various demands of the Maratha community,” a note issued by the Chief Minister’s office stated.

The decision to convene a special session was prompted by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil, who is on a hunger strike at Antarwali Saarati village in Jalna district. After the Maha Vikas Aghadi meeting, Congress president Nana Patole said that the Maharashtra Assembly session would commence on Monday, adding that the meeting was being held to form a strategy for the session. “The Maharashtra Assembly session commences tomorrow. The system is that they should call the opposition for BAC and discuss the proceedings of the House. However, the BJP government in the state does not want to follow the constitutional process. So, we came together to form a strategy for the session,” Patole told ANI.

Meanwhile, the political scenario of Maharashtra is fluid as Sharad Pawar lost his party name and symbol.

Veteran politician Sharad Pawar said on Saturday the Election Commission’s decision to recognise the group led by his nephew Ajit Pawar as the ‘real’ Nationalist Congress Party was “not in accordance with law.”

Sharad Pawar moved the Supreme Court, challenging the decision of the ECI to officially recognise the Ajit Pawar faction as the real NCP and the use of party symbols.

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the interim order by the Election Commission of India (ECI) that allowed veteran leader Sharad Pawar to use ‘Nationalist Congress Party–Sharad Chandra Pawar’ would continue till further orders.

On February 6, the poll panel, while applying the test of majority in the legislative wing, ruled that Ajit Pawar’s faction was the ‘real’ NCP and permitted the faction to use the ‘clock’ symbol for the party.

In its order, the Election Commission noted that the total number of NCP MLAs in the Maharashtra State Assembly stood at 81, and out of this, Ajit Pawar submitted affidavits of 57 MLAs in his support, while Sharad Pawar had only 28 affidavits.

Hence, the poll panel concluded that the Ajit Pawar faction enjoyed the majority support of the legislators and could lay claim to being the NCP. (ANI)

  • ‘This Is Just A Trailer’: Eknath Shinde After Milind Deora Joins Shiv Sena |

MUMBAI: In a big setback for Congress, former Union Minister and Congress leader Milind Deora joined Shiv Sena on Sunday, prompting Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to declare that this move is just the beginning.

    Shinde Hits Out At Congress

During a gathering in Mumbai, Chief Minister Shinde likened the event to a trailer, hinting at more prominent political figures making their way into Shiv Sena’s fold before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Shinde, drawing parallels with his own past, highlighted the critical decisions involved in such transitions.

“I am not a doctor. Despite not being a doctor, I performed an operation one and a half years before…didn’t even have to make stitches, and the operation was done. I won’t say anything more than this…This is just a trailer, the film is yet to come in,” expressed Shinde.

    Deora’s Emotional Outburst

Milind Deora, expressing sentiments similar to Shinde’s past, shared his feelings about the decision. The event unfolded as Deora formally joined Shiv Sena in the presence of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other party leaders in Mumbai.

Deora Pledges To Strengthen Shinde’s Leadership

In a ceremony held at Varsha, the official residence of the Chief Minister, Deora reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen Shinde’s leadership. He praised Shinde’s vision for Mumbai and the state, expressing his intention to contribute to the party’s growth.

“I am joining him to strengthen his hands further. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah also have a vision for the country. I want to strengthen their hands as well through the Shiv Sena,” stated Deora.

End Of An Era: Deora Bids Farewell To 55-Year-Old Association With Congress

With this move, Deora concluded his 55-year association with Congress, a legacy passed down from his father Murli Deora. While emphasizing his commitment to Congress, Deora explained the rationale behind his decision, citing the party’s evolving landscape.

“I have been receiving a lot of phone calls since morning that why did I sever 55-year-old ties of my family with the Congress party…I was loyal to the party during its most challenging decade,” said Deora.

Deora’s Reflections On Changes In Congress

Highlighting the transformation in the Congress party, Deora emphasized the differences between the current scenario and the Congress of the past. He pointed out the importance of constructive suggestions, merit, and capability, suggesting that these factors played a role in his and Shinde’s decision to join Shiv Sena.

As the political landscape in Maharashtra undergoes a significant shift, the entry of Milind Deora into Shiv Sena sets the stage for more twists and turns in the run-up to the upcoming elections.

  • Uddhav warns of payback for those targeting his party; Shinde accuses him of betraying Hindutva

    By Agencies

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday said those harassing his party will face consequences when it returns to power, while Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde who heads a rival faction accused him of “burying” the Hindutva ideology.

The two Shiv Senas held their separate Dussehra rallies in the city on Tuesday evening.

Speaking at Shivaji Park, the traditional venue of the party’s Dussehra rally, Thackeray also batted for coalition governments. Attempts were being made to “steal” the Shiv Sena, he said.

“After we come to power, we will hang upside down those who are harassing us,” Uddhav said.

Targeting the BJP, his friend-turned-foe, Thackeray said there should be a strong government, but not of “any one party with a brute majority.”

Uddhav said the parties who used to target the BJP by questioning the timeline for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya are feeling embarrassed now. “They have lost their face. How will they go to Ayodhya now?” he asked.

Speaking at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai, Shinde slammed Thackeray for forming an alliance with Congress and the Samajwadi Party while “burying Hindutva thoughts” of late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.

“At one time Uddhav’s father Bal Thackeray gave the slogan ‘Garvase kaho hum Hindu hai’ (say with pride we are Hindu), but now the new slogans being shouted at Shivaji Park are ‘Garvase kaho hum Congressi hai, Garvase kaho hum Samajwadi hai’,” Shinde claimed.

Shinde said he won’t be surprised if they (Shiv Sena-UBT) ally with Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM and even “hug terrorist organisations such as Hamas, Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Toiba for their selfish motives and chair (power)”.

The Shinde faction had applied for permission for a Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park this year, but later withdrew the application. Shinde later announced that the annual Dussehra rally will be organised at Azad Maidan instead of Shivaji Park.

This cleared the path for the Uddhav-led Shiv Sena to hold the annual rally at Shivaji Park.

Shiv Sena (Shinde group) and Shiv Sena (UBT), last year, locked horns over organising the annual Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park, where the party has been holding the rally since 1966, indicating the significance of this venue for both of them.

However, the Bombay High Court had ruled in favour of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and allowed the Uddhav Thackeray faction to hold the Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park.

This came after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) refused to give permission to the two factions to hold the rally, based on the local police report, which said that the event may cause law and order issues in the area.

The event is significant as Sena is now divided into two factions and the rally was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

We want to bring back reservations to the Maratha community that earlier got cancelled due to the Supreme Court order. We are also planning to undertake various schemes for the deprived communities. We will soon have separate meetings for welfare of smaller communities. There are various boards for welfare and development of various communities like BARTI, SARATI etc, which will be strengthened by giving them adequate funds,” Shinde added.

  • Maharashtra: Three more patients die at Thane civic hospital, toll climbs to 21

    By PTI

THANE: Three more patients died at the municipal-run Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital at Kalwa in Thane district, taking the toll to 21 since Saturday last. Authorities have started moving patients who are not in serious condition and new admissions to a civil hospital nearby if they are willing to be relocated, officials said on Monday.

Thane’s Additional Municipal Commissioner (in charge of health services) Sandeep Malvi said in the 24-hour period ended on Monday morning, three more patients died at the civic-run hospital, while one patient was brought dead.

He, however, did not disclose the causes of their death.

The number of deaths at the Kalwa-based hospital has come down in the last 24 hours and the details are being compiled and analysed, Malvi claimed.

The CSM Hospital had reported 18 deaths in a 24-hour period between Saturday and Sunday, following which Chief Minister Shinde ordered setting up of an independent committee to carry out a probe into the clinical aspect of the deaths.

With this, 21 patients have died at the municipal corporation-run facility since Saturday last.

The CSM Hospital was “over-loaded” and treating nearly 600 patients per day against its capacity of 500, as per officials.

The Civil Hospital located nearby in the city is being renovated, so the load falls on the Kalwa facility, former Thane mayor Naresh Mhakse, who is also spokesperson of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, said on Sunday.

Dr Aniruddha Malgaonkar, medical superintendent of the CSM Hospital, on Monday said the option of shifting patients to the Civil Hospital has been left to them.

“We will shift only those patients who are recovering and from among the new admissions,” he said.

The CSM Hospital admits around 150 new patients per day, which has heavily increased its load, he claimed.

The Civil Hospital, located at a short distance from the CSM Hospital, has a capacity of 350 beds and its occupancy is about 50 per cent, as per officials.

Asked about three deaths reported in the last 24 hours compared to 18 in the previous one day, a civic official said on Saturday and a couple of days before it, some extremely serious patients were admitted to the CSM Hospital.

The deaths of patients happened in a short span, and hence attracted public attention, he said.

Most of those among the 18 deceased patients were over 50 years of age and many were referred to the CSM Hospital from private medical facilities, the official said.

“There is absolutely no medical negligence,” he claimed, adding the hospital staff is extremely co-operative.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shinde on Monday visited the CSM Hospital and interacted with patients, their relatives and also reviewed the current staff and requirement of additional personnel to manage the influx of patients.

Speaking to reporters later, Shinde said, “I have sanctioned Rs 71 crore for creation of more facilities at the hospital as well as at the mental hospital in Thane city, where general patients are treated. The Thane city’s civil hospital is under construction hence its health services are shifted to premises of the mental hospital.”

“The bed capacity of the civil hospital was 366 and it will be increased by 100 soon. The bed capacity of the Kalwa hospital would also be increased,” said Shinde, who is the MLA from Kopri-Pachpakhadi in Thane district.

Asked about the CSM Hospital allegedly lacking in providing adequate medical services to patients, the Chief Minister said this was not the case.

“The hospital has already admitted more patients than its capacity. Additional staff to handle patients will be made available soon,” he added.

Asked what action the government would take against those responsible for the death of so many patients, he said those found guilty will be punished.

“The inquiry committee report is expected to be out by August 25. Those found guilty will face action. The patients who died due to negligence, their kin will get some compensation from the state government,” said Shinde.

“I do not want to comment on the medical staff here as they are facing a lot of work pressure. I do not want to demoralise them,” said the Chief Minister.

A nine-member committee set up by the Maharashtra government is looking into the deaths at the CSM  Hospital. The panel, headed by health commissioner Dheeraj Kumar, has been asked to submit a report by August 25, as per an order issued by the state health department.

The state government had recently sanctioned Rs 60 crore for infrastructure improvement of the CSM Hospital, a senior official said.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) chief Bangar said the bed capacity of the hospital will be doubled from 500 to 1,000, while good hostel facilities will be provided for resident doctors.

In the 2022-23 TMC budget, a sum of Rs 317.20 crore was earmarked for health, of which Rs 10 crore was for improving facilities at the CSM Hospital and the Rajiv Gandhi Medical College located on its premises, he said.
