Tashkent is set to etch its name in para-sport history as World Para Athletics names it the host for the 2027 Championship. For the first time, this premier global para-athletics extravaganza will light up Uzbekistan and Central Asia, captivating audiences worldwide. The June 2027 showdown at Olympic City Main Stadium will unite top para-athletes in a celebration of resilience and excellence.
Tuesday’s announcement from the International Paralympic Committee highlights Tashkent hosting the 13th edition, the fifth Asian stop after Doha, Dubai, Kobe, and New Delhi. Expect around 1,300 competitors from over 100 nations, making it Uzbekistan’s most monumental international para-event ever.
The lineup will boast no fewer than 164 Paralympic-style events, possibly expanding further. WPA chief Paul Fitzgerald hailed the choice: ‘Bringing the Championship to Tashkent is a game-changer. It will supercharge our sport’s growth, broaden our reach, and challenge attitudes toward disability in Central Asia.’
He spotlighted Uzbekistan’s ascent: ‘Uzbek athletes have shone brightly on world stages, thanks to smart investments by their National Paralympic Committee. This championship will create unforgettable moments across the region.’
Reflecting on New Delhi 2025, where 1,000+ athletes vied for glory in 186 events, Brazil led with 44 medals (15 gold), China followed with 52 (13 gold), and Uzbekistan cracked the top 15 with five golds. Tashkent 2027 is poised to elevate the bar, fostering inclusivity and inspiring future generations.
