West Bengal’s Baharampur constituency turned into a flashpoint of electoral violence as a family loyal to Congress candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury became the target of a savage mob attack. Chowdhury alleged that Trinamool Congress supporters carried out the midnight raid in retaliation for the family’s assistance during his campaign. Among the injured were two women and an elderly member, highlighting the personal toll of political animosity.

The incident came to light when Chowdhury received a tearful call from the family mid-dinner. They described a nightmare: intruders smashing furniture, beating the senior citizen, and harassing a female member. Chowdhury visited the ravaged home, consoling the victims and vowing justice. He revealed that the family patriarch had fanned him during a sweltering election duty, a simple act of kindness now met with vicious reprisal.

Lashing out at authorities, Chowdhury claimed police inaction enables such ‘goondaraj’ – daily rampages by armed, drunken thugs known to all. “We won’t tolerate this,” he declared, committing to lodge FIRs and stage demonstrations if arrests don’t follow swiftly. This brazen assault has amplified concerns over Bengal’s deteriorating poll environment, where supporter intimidation threatens democratic fairness. With Lok Sabha battles raging, such events demand urgent electoral oversight to prevent further escalation.
