Saturday brought a second chance for democracy in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas, where 15 polling booths in Magrahat West and Diamond Harbour reopened following serious complaints of booth capturing and irregularities on April 29. The Election Commission’s swift intervention aims to restore trust in the second phase of assembly elections.
Polling kicked off at 7 AM across 11 booths in Magrahat West and four in Diamond Harbour. Images from booth 117 at Bagda Junior High School captured lines of patient voters braving the morning chill, a stark contrast to the previous turmoil.
‘We had a good voting experience last time, only to hear it was scrapped,’ said one voter. ‘Today’s arrangements are top-notch.’ A working voter noted, ‘Vote first, then work—smooth sailing here.’
Highlighting women’s participation, a female elector said, ‘Up at 6 AM, perfect facilities, no intimidation. Great job by authorities.’
Based on detailed submissions from polling officials and general observers, the EC mandated repolling to counter claims of foul play. This district, a TMC stronghold with BJP making inroads, remains pivotal.
Peaceful proceedings and high enthusiasm suggest the repoll could boost overall legitimacy. With accusations flying between parties, these votes might prove decisive, reinforcing the EC’s zero-tolerance stance on electoral malpractices.
