Bhubaneswar buzzed with parliamentary activity as the Joint Parliamentary Committee, led by BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, delved into three transformative bills during meetings with Odisha’s top bureaucrats and stakeholder groups on Wednesday.
At the heart of the discussions were the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Union Territory Government (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Tabled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah last August, these bills target deep-rooted issues plaguing Indian politics.
Sarangi, speaking to reporters, outlined the JPC’s mission: fostering a criminal-free political environment while strengthening ethical foundations enshrined in the Constitution. The committee’s work follows the bills’ referral in November 2025 amid Lok Sabha chaos.
Since its first session on December 4, the panel has crisscrossed states, engaging governments from Odisha and Maharashtra, and summoning experts to Delhi for inputs.
‘We’re witnessing remarkable alignment on the need to purge crime from politics,’ Sarangi noted, even as debates persist over certain clauses. The overarching goal—elevating democracy through transparency and accountability—remains unchallenged.
One bold stipulation stands out: any high office holder, from ministers to the Prime Minister, faces automatic resignation after prolonged detention. This provision signals a zero-tolerance stance on criminality in governance.
With consultations ongoing, the JPC’s efforts in Odisha mark a critical phase in legislating a healthier political ecosystem, potentially setting precedents for ethical leadership across India.
