The music world mourns Asha Bhosle, but her spirit lives on through stories like the one shared by Manoj Muntashir on Indian Idol. In the special tribute episode, the lyricist unveiled the behind-the-scenes magic of ‘Jhumka Gira Re,’ the timeless track from ‘Mera Saaya’ that redefined playback singing.

It all began with a phone call from the legendary Madan Mohan to Asha ji: ‘I’ve got a song for you – Jhumka gira re, in Bareilly’s market.’ Her voice breathed life into the lyrics, making it a chartbuster in the 1960s. Sadhana’s coy, playful dance sequence amplified its appeal, turning it into Bollywood folklore.

Such was the song’s cultural ripple that authorities in Bareilly erected a massive 14-foot jhumka sculpture on the city’s edge, renaming the spot ‘Jhumka Chowk.’ This extraordinary tribute underscores Asha Bhosle’s power to influence beyond screens and studios.

With a career exceeding 83 years, Asha Bhosle recorded over 12,000 songs. ‘Mera Saaya,’ helmed by Raj Khosla, starred Sunil Dutt and others, blending suspense with melody. Hospitalized for exhaustion and infection on April 11, she passed on April 12 at 92.

Granddaughter Janaai’s poignant post reminds us: Celebrate her with the joy she infused in lives. From ‘Indian Idol’ sets to Bareilly’s streets, Asha ji’s melody endures, proving music’s eternal bond with memory.
