Colombo became the epicenter of naval excellence as India and Sri Lanka concluded their biennial IND-SL DIVEX exercise on April 28. The fourth iteration, spanning April 21-28, underscored the growing defense ties between the two neighbors through intensive underwater training.

INS Nirvikshak, India’s go-to asset for submarine escape and deep diving, anchored the joint effort. Divers from both navies executed high-stakes operations, from advanced mixed-gas dives to rescue simulations in challenging deep-sea conditions. Operating near historic WWII wrecks like SS Wooster and SS Perseus added realism, pushing limits to over 55 meters depth.

The agenda emphasized interoperability, with teams sharing expertise on technical diving, emergency procedures, and open-water rescues. This not only hones individual skills but elevates collective readiness for real-world crises in the vast Indian Ocean.

Sri Lankan Navy’s Rear Admiral S J Kumara toured the Indian ship, commending the collaborative spirit. He highlighted future scopes in submarine rescue ops, vital for maritime safety. Off-duty activities like sports and yoga bridged cultural gaps, while a poignant wreath-laying ceremony remembered fallen heroes.

India’s gesture of donating mobile medical units—equipped for 200-patient emergencies—further solidified goodwill under the health outreach program. The exercise’s success signals stronger bilateral defense posture, promising enhanced regional stability and rapid response capabilities.
