A significant victory for elder rights was recorded in a Muzaffarpur court this week as a widow successfully secured ₹21 lakh that had been withheld due to a family dispute. Amrika Devi, a resident of Berua village, had been struggling for years to access the funds left by her late husband, a former Bihar Police employee. The case took a dark turn when it was revealed that her sons had actively obstructed the payment process by misinforming authorities, hoping to divert the money to themselves. Despite the betrayal by her immediate family, Amrika Devi found an unexpected ally in human rights activist and lawyer S.K. Jha. Understanding that the widow lacked the resources to fight a long-drawn-out legal battle, Jha committed to representing her for free. He meticulously documented the sons’ fraudulent claims and presented a clear case of administrative oversight to the District Magistrate. The legal intervention ensured that justice was served, and the blocked funds were finally credited to the widow’s account.
