Punjab is fortifying its defenses against cross-border threats with a massive surveillance upgrade. The state police has rolled out 2,291 high-tech CCTV cameras at 585 points along the Pakistan frontier, creating a robust ‘second security line’ to monitor sensitive zones and movement corridors meticulously.
Launched under the ‘Gangstern Te Vaar’ operation, this move targets the supply pipelines of gangster networks operating from across the border. Complementing BSF’s frontline role, Punjab Police acts as the inner barrier, stopping infiltrations in their tracks.
The CCTV system now connects 41 border police stations, streamlining oversight and enabling rapid interventions. Nakas (checkpoints) are smarter too—fueled by intel for targeted searches, ditching outdated protocols.
Drone threats, involving arms and drugs, have prompted heightened anti-drone measures in adjoining districts. ‘This layer ensures crime doesn’t advance beyond the breach point,’ said Amritsar Rural SSP Suheil Kaseem Meer, highlighting integration with village-level guards and community watchers.
DGP Gaurav Yadav underscored its strategic importance: ‘We’re dismantling gangster ecosystems end-to-end, from smuggling entry to street-level delivery.’ This proactive stance promises to choke criminal operations at inception, bolstering Punjab’s safety net.
