In a decade-long battle against malaria, Gujarat has achieved a stunning 92 percent reduction in cases, coupled with positivity rates under one per thousand, as revealed by health officials amid World Malaria Day celebrations. The state’s shift to Category-1 status signals robust progress in elimination efforts.

Observed annually on April 25 by WHO, this year’s call to action – ‘A Firm Resolve to End Malaria: We Can Do It, We Must Do It Now’ – spotlights accelerated strategies for wiping out the disease. From rural hamlets to bustling cities, teams conducted meticulous surveillance: household visits for fever checks, larva destruction drives, worker blood tests at sites, and bio-control with fish in water pools.

Over 181,000 fever suspects were tested in 2025, with positives treated promptly at no cost through public facilities. This multi-pronged approach has transformed Gujarat’s health landscape, proving that vigilance pays off.

The disease spreads through bites from Anopheles mosquitoes harboring Plasmodium, thriving in still waters. Symptoms strike suddenly: rigors, fever spikes with shivering, migraines, muscle pain, vomiting, followed by drenching sweats.

Public outreach exploded with street fairs, processions, campus workshops, and digital blitzes across TV, radio, and online channels. Simple habits like sealing water vessels, clearing puddles, meshing windows, netting beds, and testing fevers early form the bedrock of prevention. Health leaders affirm: swift diagnosis and full therapy are non-negotiable for victory.
