The Union Government has rolled out a Rs 4,886 crore package for Karnataka and Maharashtra farmers by approving MSP purchases of sunflower seeds and chickpeas. Detailed in a Ministry of Agriculture statement, this step promises market price protection amid fluctuating commodity rates.

Karnataka’s Rabi 2026 sunflower procurement gets the nod for 9,023 MT under PSS, valued at over Rs 69.66 crore. This approval by Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directly benefits producers who previously risked underselling due to weak demand.

Sunflower cultivation has grown in the state as an alternative to water-intensive crops, but price volatility remained a hurdle. Government intervention via MSP procurement will incentivize further expansion, aiding national goals to reduce edible oil imports.

Shifting to Maharashtra, chickpea procurement limits for Rabi 2025-26 surge to 8,19,882 MT, with MSP payouts topping Rs 4,816.80 crore. A 30-day extension to May 29, 2026, ensures inclusivity for late harvesters.

Pulses like chickpeas are nutritional powerhouses and vital for food security. This boosted quota addresses past shortcomings where procurement caps left many farmers out, forcing them into open markets at a loss.

Experts view these decisions as strategic, enhancing crop diversification and farmer resilience. The total financial commitment reflects fiscal priority on agriculture, a sector employing nearly half the workforce.

Looking ahead, sustained MSP mechanisms could transform rural economies. By prioritizing states like Karnataka and Maharashtra—key contributors to these crops—the government signals commitment to equitable growth across regions.
