₹28 Lakh Bribe Scandal: Woman PI Nabbed in Pune Sting

Pune’s fight against graft intensified as the Anti-Corruption Bureau executed a flawless operation, catching a woman police officer and her accomplice red-handed with ₹28 lakh in bribe money. The bust at a posh Koregaon Park hotel has sent shockwaves through Maharashtra’s law enforcement circles.

The officer in question, Assistant Police Inspector Vaishali Totewekar of the Economic Offences Wing, faces serious allegations. While probing a case, she reportedly extorted ₹2 lakh initially and then haggled for more—ultimately agreeing to ₹28 lakh to sway the investigation outcome. The victim turned whistleblower, alerting ACB on April 30 after evidence confirmed the demands.

On May 2, the trap was set. Totewekar cleverly routed the transaction through her associate, Sambhaji Chavhan, avoiding direct involvement. But the plan backfired spectacularly. Moments after the cash exchange at Hotel Conrad’s gate, ACB sleuths pounced, securing the bribe and arresting both parties.

Experts hail the ACB’s swift action but warn of pervasive issues. ‘This isn’t isolated; it’s symptomatic of deeper malaise,’ said a former cop. Social media is abuzz with memes and calls for accountability. As investigations deepen, the scandal threatens to implicate more in the chain.

For ordinary citizens navigating the justice system, this serves as a grim reminder: corruption lurks even among those sworn to protect.
