Shia Board Objects to HC Verdict on Public Namaz

A fresh political row has gripped Uttar Pradesh after the Allahabad High Court barred namaz in public places without permission, prompting backlash from the Shia community and sparking nationwide discussions on religious rights.

In a pointed response, AISPLB’s Maulana Yasoob Abbas clarified that open-air prayers are reserved for Jumu’ah, Eid, and similar festivals, not routine practices. He suggested the judiciary might have received incomplete information, urging a nuanced understanding.

Abbas linked the issue to international pressures on Shias, detailing arrests and harassment of community members bearing surnames like Zaidi and Rizvi across Gulf nations. He recounted his meeting with Rajnath Singh in Delhi, pressing for diplomatic action to safeguard Indian Shias abroad.

Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli offered a balanced perspective, endorsing the court’s directive to prevent disruptions. ‘Religious observances must respect fellow citizens’ convenience,’ he asserted, calling for equitable enforcement on all communities.

Political parties are divided: some label the order restrictive, others see it as essential for law and order. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between tradition and modernity in public life.

As leaders trade barbs, the verdict could set precedents for managing religious gatherings, influencing future policies on public spaces amid India’s pluralistic ethos.
