In a swift public health victory, Karnataka health officials declared the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak at Hesarghatta’s poultry training center under control after 10 days of intense monitoring. As of now, not a single human case has emerged, easing widespread concerns.
The virus was identified on April 14 via NIHSAD Bhopal’s confirmation from samples at the Mathikuru facility. Coordinated action kicked off with rapid response teams from local health centers mobilizing to contain it.
Zoning was critical: the core 3 km radius labeled infected, extending to 10 km for surveillance. All birds were humanely culled, contaminated materials destroyed under bio-security measures.
Over 28,000 people in 22 nearby villages underwent daily checks for a full 10 days, backed by repeated disinfection drives. Day-five samples from quarantined workers came back H5N1-negative from NIV Bengaluru; day-10 tests are pending but promising.
Vigilance continues citywide, with directives for health facilities to monitor ILI and SARI cases closely. Essential supplies like PPE, masks, antivirals, and testing kits must be readily available.
Poultry operations halt for 90 days at the site, with bi-weekly fumigation and disinfection protocols in place. A clean bill of health was certified on April 21.
Citizens are warned against handling dead birds, to report anomalies promptly, and to cook meat thoroughly. Karnataka urges reliance on official channels amid floating misinformation.
