In a pressing address on Friday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman cautioned Indian banks against the ‘unprecedented’ hazards posed by Anthropic’s Mythos AI model. Despite the sector’s resilience against new tech challenges, she stressed the imperative for banks to stay on high alert.

During a media interaction, Sitharaman revealed that India is keeping a watchful eye on the risks from this powerful AI, which is making waves worldwide due to its superior abilities. MeitY is partnering with global counterparts to dissect these threats and gauge their implications for banking operations.

The minister affirmed the strength of Indian banks but underscored the need for greater wariness in the face of fast-advancing AI. Updates to current rules and security protocols may be essential to tackle these sophisticated risks.

She directed banks to unite in their response, with the Indian Banks’ Association spearheading inter-bank dialogues to fortify collective defenses.

These comments come a day after she first flagged the extraordinary dangers of Mythos AI. This comes against a backdrop of India’s economic strength, including robust forex reserves that empower RBI’s policy decisions.

Just weeks ago, speaking at NIPFP on April 6, Sitharaman praised the fruits of fiscal prudence over the past decade, allowing for continued government spending, RBI rate adjustments, and aid to vital industries. As Mythos AI looms large, the message is clear: vigilance is the key to safeguarding India’s financial future.
