In a night of turmoil, Mumbai’s Bhandup and Mankhurd areas became scenes of panic due to separate accidents. Late-night revelry turned deadly when eight people tumbled into a construction pit near Bhandup West’s Metro Mall, marking the first of two harrowing events.
The mishap occurred around 11:29 PM beside an SRA building under construction close to Janata Market and Matoshree Marriage Hall. Rescue teams from fire services, police, BMC, and ambulances worked tirelessly to extract the victims. Seven of the injured—Aniket Kadam (26), Shreyas Surve (25), Jaydeep Shah (21), Sanket Juvatkar (25), Aditya Aher (26), Aniket Mahesh Patil (20), and Ankit Kumar Rohit (19)—are stable in hospital. Bhalachandra Phale (25) fights for life in another medical center.
Dawn brought no respite as a ferocious fire broke out at 5 AM in Mankhurd’s Ekta Nagar on GM Link Road. Four to five shops were quickly consumed by the blaze. Six fire engines arrived promptly, supported by multi-agency teams including police, power officials, PWD, and BMC. No lives were lost, but the commercial losses are significant.
Experts point to lax oversight in construction zones and fire-prone commercial hubs as root causes. Mumbai’s civic body faces renewed calls for rigorous inspections and better urban planning. With investigations underway, these incidents serve as stark reminders of the perils lurking in the city’s rapid development.
