As Bihar battles relentless summer heat and rising humidity, Patna district authorities have mandated shorter school days for primary students. The move aims to protect children from heat-related illnesses during peak temperatures.
District Magistrate S.M. Tyagarajan invoked emergency powers to cap school sessions: pre-primary, anganwadis, and Classes 1-5 end by 11:30 AM sharp. Classes 6-8 conclude at 12:30 PM, refining an earlier order. Higher classes remain unaffected.
All government and private schools must comply without delay. The order runs from April 21 through April 25, 2026.
IMD’s Patna center warns of severe heatwave conditions in multiple regions. From April 22-24, northwest Bihar (West/East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran), north-central (Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Vaishali, Samastipur), and southern districts (Patna, Arwal, Jehanabad, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Kaimur, Nalanda, Nawada, Gaya) will see mercury levels hit 40-42°C.
Humid air will exacerbate the ‘feels like’ temperature, posing health risks. Officials recommend ample water intake, loose attire, minimal sun exposure post-noon, and extra vigilance for vulnerable groups.
This timely intervention highlights administrative responsiveness, ensuring education continues safely despite adversarial weather patterns.
