In a booming sign for India’s automotive sector, two-wheeler wholesale sales reached an unprecedented 22 million units domestically in fiscal year 2026, as per a Tuesday report. This surge marks a pivotal moment, driven by policy support and shifting consumer preferences.

ICRA’s analysis reveals March 2026 wholesale volumes up 20%, with retail sales leaping 28.7% annually. The full-year domestic growth stood at 11%, building on a 10.2% wholesale increase despite a modest 1% rise in the first half.

The second half accelerated dramatically to 20.3% growth, propelled by GST reforms that supercharged Q3 and Q4 sales. Retail figures echoed this trend: 28.7% in March and 13% for FY26.

Factors fueling this boom? Enhanced rural cash flows, monetary easing via repo rate reductions, tax incentives, and a conducive economic backdrop. Manufacturers innovated aggressively, rolling out fresh models across price points to meet rising aspirations.

Electric vehicles stole the spotlight, with 192,023 units retailed in March—a 47.4% year-on-year jump. Annual EV sales grew 21.9%, elevating their share to 9.4% that month and 3.3% overall.

On the export front, March saw 17.5% growth, with FY26 totals up 23.3%, aided by superior products and brand equity abroad. Still, geopolitical strife in West Asia threatens supply stability, a concern for exporters.

For FY27, growth may taper to 3-5% due to base effects and El Niño-induced monsoon risks impacting villages. Countering this, GST momentum and scrappage incentives offer hope. India’s two-wheeler market is poised for sustained leadership globally.
