Geneva’s Palais des Nations became a hub of cultural splendor on Friday, hosting the 2026 UN Chinese Language Day and the sixth CMG International Film Festival. Jointly organized by China Media Group, China’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, and the UN Office there, the event attracted over 350 participants, encompassing diplomats from over 30 nations and leaders from global bodies.

Addressing the gathering, UN Geneva Director-General Tatiana Valovaya praised Chinese as a cornerstone among the UN’s official languages. It acts as a crucial conduit linking China to the international community and Chinese heritage to diverse civilizations. With ‘Knowledge’ as the focal theme, the day championed intelligent, purposeful engagement across borders.

CMG chief Shen Haixiong delivered a compelling video address, tracing the Chinese language’s roots through 5,000 years of rich history. He outlined CMG’s unwavering mission to propagate Chinese culture via exchanges that transcend boundaries. By integrating ‘culture + technology,’ initiatives harnessing 5G, advanced video formats, and AI are propelling cultural interactions into a futuristic realm.

Ambassador Chya Kweide of China’s Geneva mission underscored the significance of the UN Chinese Language Day in preserving linguistic variety and spurring intellectual discourse. He linked the ‘Knowledge’ theme to Chinese civilization’s perpetual evolution, the rise of national strength, and collaborative human endeavors.

Highlights included a lively panel ‘Chyen Ji Ru Myen,’ exploring Chinese characters through youthful perspectives from China and abroad. CMG showcased captivating performances like the ‘Chinese Calligraphy Show’ and the innovative ‘Chonghua Kaokongji: Smart Robot.’ The unveiling of ‘Learn Chinese with Films’ promised to make language acquisition cinematic and fun.

From hands-on calligraphy to tech-infused heritage exhibits, the immersive sessions captivated all. Now in its sixth year under CMG’s stewardship, this festival not only celebrated language but also heralded a new era of tech-driven cultural diplomacy, promising deeper global connections ahead.
