Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann hailed a historic victory for Sikh faith after Governor Gulab Chand Kataria approved the stringent amendment to protect Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Passed unanimously in the state assembly on April 13, the Jagat Jyoti Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Bill 2026 is now official law.

In an emotional X post, Mann wrote, ‘The bill against desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji has been signed by the Governor and become law. From this humble servant, billions of thanks to Waheguru ji and heartfelt gratitude to the entire sangat.’

The law mandates life sentences without remission for those found guilty of blasphemy against the sacred text, plus hefty fines reaching Rs 25 lakh. Investigations are restricted to senior gazetted officers, eliminating backroom deals or plea bargains.

This overhaul addresses long-standing grievances over past sacrilege episodes that ignited protests and violence. Punjab’s government argues it will instill fear among potential offenders, promoting peace by upholding religious sanctity.

Background reveals a pattern of such incidents straining social fabric. The Aam Aadmi Party-led regime positions this as fulfilling electoral promises to the Sikh community, which forms the state’s backbone.

With enforcement mechanisms in place, the law could set a precedent for other states grappling with faith-based offenses. Community leaders have welcomed it, though some call for balanced application to avoid misuse. Mann’s proactive stance underscores his government’s focus on cultural preservation amid political challenges.
