US Blockade Breached: Iranian Oil Tanker Heads to Asia

Tehran scores a tactical win as one of its massive oil tankers evades America’s naval cordon and steams toward Asian markets. According to maritime intelligence from TankerTrackers.com, the supertanker ‘Huge,’ a VLCC under National Iranian Tanker Company, is loaded with 1.9 million barrels of crude worth $220 million.

Spotted last near Sri Lankan waters 10 days back, the ship is now traversing the Lombok Strait en route to Indonesia’s Riau islands. The US had imposed a blockade on Iranian ports on April 13, but the tanker was already in position, having gone dark on AIS trackers after leaving the Malacca Strait on March 20.

Iranian outlets boasted on April 29 of 52 vessels breaking through, while the US counters with claims of turning back 41 ships. Pentagon assessments, leaked to Axios on Saturday, peg Iran’s losses at $4.8 billion in oil sales, forcing potential production cuts as storage tanks fill up.

This evasion tactic—disabling transponders and charting sneaky routes—exposes vulnerabilities in enforcement. With global oil markets watching, Iran’s resourcefulness could embolden further attempts, testing Washington’s resolve in the Persian Gulf standoff.

Experts note that while individual breakthroughs occur, the overall squeeze on Tehran’s economy is tightening. Yet, for now, this supertanker represents a symbolic victory, carrying vital fuel to buyers undeterred by sanctions.
