Twice-a-Month Paychecks Coming for Nepal Civil Servants

In a significant policy shift, Nepal’s government employees will soon receive salaries every 15 days, ditching the traditional once-a-month routine. The decision, greenlit at the finance minister level on April 17, has sparked widespread interest across the region.

Government offices have received official directives to gear up for bi-weekly disbursements. This stands in stark contrast to practices in neighboring countries like India and Pakistan, where monthly paydays dominate.

The rationale? To supercharge the economy through increased consumer spending. With cash hitting pockets more regularly, officials expect a boost in market transactions and overall economic vitality.

Deepak Lamichhane from the FCGO assured smooth technical execution. ‘No issues for us in processing payments for army, police, or civilian staff,’ he said. Yet, the Civil Service Act’s monthly payment clause poses a snag, possibly needing legislative tweaks.

Without an active parliament, the government eyes an ordinance for quick action. Lamichhane hinted at promising workarounds in progress. This change could enhance employee satisfaction and financial planning, marking a progressive step for Nepal’s public sector.

As the nation watches, this reform promises not just frequent pay but a ripple effect on daily economic life, potentially inspiring similar moves elsewhere in South Asia.
